About The Book

Blindness

A Magnificent parable of loss and disorientation and a vivid evocation of the horrors of the twentieth century, Saramago’s surreal allegory explores the ability of the human spirit to prevail in even the most absurdly unjust of conditions. It is the voice of Blindness that gives it its charm. By turns ironic, humorous and frank. It is simultaneously contemporary and timeless, and ambitiously confronts the human condition without a false struck anywhere. The Book is a powerful portrayal of human’s appetites and weakness and human’s ultimately exhilarating spirit.

In The White of The Eye

The Piece “In the white of the eye” of the contemporary age

One more time Aroldo Fernandes brings the literature wor(l)d to the stage. This time using the inspirational Jose Saramago’s book Blindness to compose the piece “In the white of the eye”. He is always looking for dance which has content and a message, characters with psychological identity, themes with social and political relevance. With “In The white of the eye” his ambition is to create a work that comes from a collective process, being radical and provocative and that brings the individual dancer personalities to the stage as opposed to standardized dancer figures. In the same way the piece is not a submissive caricature of the book, but has its own way to communicate this humanity degradation in the contemporary age.

Madredeus: Anseio (Fuga Apressada)

Anxiety(Rushing Fugue)
Words and music by Pedro Ayres Magalhaes

Anxiety of having
A final vision
Of human society
I’m wandering
Between safe illusions about the truth

I confess...
I’m feeling
A lack of sensitivity and I ask
With a song
To be updated

Anxiety of having
A complete vision of our age
Driven by opposed
Versions of Reality

I confess, I haven’t lost yet
All the will to have
A photo
Of all Mankind

Anxiety of finding
One reason
Amidst the big confusion
Still looking forward
To come back
And have a chat with you
As soon as I will have come to stop.
